5G advancement takes the lead in Schleswig-Holstein: The region emerges as a pioneer in next-generation mobile technology.
5G Network Expansion in Schleswig-Holstein Details and Municipality Engagement
Kiel, May 23, 2025
Schleswig-Holstein leads in 5G area coverage, boasting an increase of 5.4 percentage points and reaching 95% coverage. The 5G network expansion continues, with the goal of connecting 98% of the population by the end of 2025.
Two years ago, the coverage area was 14,120 square kilometers; today, it has grown to 15,000 square kilometers. Initially, 1.39 million households had access to the Telekom’s 5G network, and the number is predicted to reach 1.44 million by the end of the year.
With the network growth comes an increased demand for data, which means closing remaining gaps, meeting license requirements, and addressing expiring site contracts. Mathias Poeten, the head of mobile networks at Deutsche Telekom, emphasized the importance of focusing more on shared objectives and addressing roadblocks to ensure comprehensive coverage for all.
To achieve this, municipalities can actively contribute by participating in site searches and offering municipal buildings or suitable areas for network expansion. Alternatively, property owners are encouraged to propose rooftop or mast sites, which can be found at . Deutsche Funkturm, responsible for building sites for Telekom, offers long-term and location-specific rental agreements for those participating in such ventures.
Municipalities can facilitate rapid and efficient 5G expansion in several ways. First, they can provide suitable locations for new infrastructure, such as public buildings, traffic lights, streetlights, or designated towers. Second, streamlining planning and permitting processes can minimize time and costs associated with network rollout. Third, municipalities can allow Deutsche Funkturm to use existing infrastructure for hosting telecom-related equipment. Lastly, partnering with operators through public-private partnerships can accelerate deployment and ensure infrastructure is maximized for community benefit.
By collaborating with infrastructure providers, municipalities contribute significantly to the deployment and expansion of essential telecom networks, benefitting communities and bolstering connectivity.

Gadgets and technology have become increasingly integral with the growth of the 5G network in Schleswig-Holstein. Consequently, data-and-cloud-computing needs are escalating as more people gain access to the network, necessitating the closing of remaining gaps, addressing license requirements, and managing expiring site contracts.
Municipalities, with their contribution in site searches, offering public buildings or designated areas, and partnering with operators in public-private partnerships, play a crucial role in facilitating technology-driven 5G expansion in Schleswig-Holstein, thus ensuring enhanced connectivity and community benefits.
