A Different Korean Automaker Plans to Challenge the Ford Ranger with a Fresh Internal Combustion Pickup Truck
Korean Brand KG Mobility Unveils New Electrified Mid-Size Pickup, Q300
KG Mobility, formerly known as SsangYong, has announced the development of a new rugged and electrified mid-size pickup truck, codenamed Q300. Set to succeed the Musso and set for a 2026 launch, the Q300 will compete with well-established models such as the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi L200, Nissan Navara, Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50, VW Amarok, Kia Tasman, GWM Cannon, and Maxus/LDV T60.
The design of the Q300 incorporates styling cues inspired by the Ford F-150 and BYD Shark for the front LED headlights, and a Jeep-style five-slot grille. At the back, the pickup will feature slim vertical LEDs and a sculpted tailgate stamped with KGM lettering. The greenhouse, pillars, and roof rails appear unchanged from the current Rexton Sports, also known as the Musso.
The new pickup is expected to replace the Rexton Sports, which has been sold internationally under the Musso name. The Q300 could potentially be sold in Europe, the UK, and Australia. The interior of the Q300 has not been shown yet, but it's expected to feature a digital cockpit and a five-seat cabin.
The next iteration of the KGM pickup could use an upgraded version of the same underpinnings, while introducing a hybrid powertrain option. The current generation of the KGM Rexton Sports/Musso was introduced in 2018 and received a facelift in 2023.
KG Mobility has also unveiled the KGM Torres EV in production form earlier this year. While the extent of shared development DNA between the Torres EV and the new pickup is not clear, it's safe to say that both vehicles share a common vision for the future of mobility.
In addition, KGM plans to spin the Musso name into a sub-brand for electric, hybrid, and combustion-powered trucks. The Q300 is expected to offer diesel and new hybrid powertrain configurations.
A teaser video for the Q300 has been uploaded on YouTube, hinting at the pickup's rugged and tough design. The full reveal of the Q300 could arrive within months, with a market launch set for 2026. The Q300 will likely compete with established players in the mid-size pickup truck market, offering a fresh and electrified option for consumers.
