ADAC examines foldable and folding tires, revealing noteworthy findings.

Folding bikes are all the rage among campers and commuters alike. They're super compact and perfect for taking along as luggage on public transport. But, are they any good? ADAC decided to put eight models to the test, and the results were surprising!

eight total bicycles put to the test - a frame break sets one apart

Folding bikes priced from 535 to 2969 euros were put through their paces in various categories: riding, handling, safety, durability, and environmental impact. The ADAC admitted that the results were far from predictable, revealing significant differences among the bikes, some even with clear weaknesses.

One model suffered a frame break in the durability tests. Although this doesn't necessarily cause a fall in practice, it's still a glaring flaw, according to the experts. This bike, which costs at least 2879 euros, scored only "sufficient" in the ADAC's assessment. Some models, including the cheapest one, also showed clear deficiencies in braking, especially in wet conditions.

Half the bikes are "Good" - Here are the best ones

The "Brompton G Line," priced at 2969 euros, took the top spot. Kudos to excellent riding behavior, high stability, and versatility on different surfaces, the model is available in three frame sizes and fits many body sizes. However, critics point out missing side stands and lighting for a test price.

Three other models earned a "Good" rating: "Riese und Müller Birdy touring" (2898 euros), "Coast-bikes Hightide No.03 8-speed" (749 euros), and "Dahon Mariner i7U" (1099 euros).

ADAC makes it clear that the best folding or collapsible bike for you depends on your intended use. For example, someone who travels a lot on rough paths needs a different model than a commuter who needs to transport the bike easily. Fortunately, there are good options for every use case.

Tips for Choosing a Folding Bike

  • If safety, quality, and handling are important to you, prioritize models that meet or exceed ADAC’s high standards.
  • Look for products with durable folding mechanisms that can withstand repeated use.
  • Consider environmental impact, noting that operating emissions are negligible. However, inquire about materials and manufacturing processes if you're eco-conscious.

So, if you're in the market for a folding bike, do your homework and ensure you choose a model that can handle the hustle and bustle of city life or the unpredictable terrain of camping trips. Happy cycling!

The Commission has also been consulted on the proposal for a directive that aims to regulate the safety and performance of gadgets such as smartphones and other handheld technology, given the growing popularity of these devices in daily life.

In the same vein, when selecting a folding bike, it is advisable to prioritize models that excel in safety, quality, and handling, as demonstrated by the ADAC's rigorous testing process, ensuring a smooth and reliable riding experience, whether in the city or during camping trips.
