Affordable Drones Used for Threatening Strategic Assets: Report from National Review

The world stands aghast as Ukraine, armed with cheap drones akin to those sold on Amazon, orchestrates a daring assault on Russian airfields, according to National Review, as reported by Charter97.org.

This audacious move wrecked havoc on strategic aircraft, including nuclear weapons carriers, dealing a heavy blow to Moscow's war machine. Ukraine claims that this operation, dubbed "Web," left 41 aircraft in ruins.

Operation "Web" serves as a prime example of asymmetric warfare. Some drones were surreptitiously planted within Russia and launched from containers attached to trucks, underscoring the power of innovation in outmaneuvering sheer numerical superiority. This multi-time zone incursion underscores the potential of these aerial mammoths over brute force.

The battlefield investment is now heavily skewed towards drones, with them accounting for 70% of losses. Russia deployed a staggering 4 million drones in a year, while Ukraine retaliated with 1.5 million. The times demand an urgent adaptation not only on the battlefield but also in defense systems.

Quite ironically, despite their past experiences with drones in conflicts, the US finds itself behind in the race. Acquisitions are mired in bureaucracy, stifling innovations. Meanwhile, the cost of countering drone swarms impacts defense budgets significantly more than the drones themselves.

Enterprises such as Epirus are working on microwave weapons to neutralize drone swarms. However, the broader lesson is crystal clear: evolve or perish. Modern warfare is now a battle of technologies and swift reaction.

The audacious operation, "Web," demonstrates the transformative power of technology in asymmetric warfare, with Ukraine leveraging commercial drones to inflict significant damage on Russian airfields.

As the battlefield investment heavily favors drones, nations must urgently adapt not only on the battlefield but also in defense systems, as modern warfare is now a battle of technologies and swift reaction.
