AI Taking Center Stage at Education Summit
In August, Dana Bedden, a renowned educator, will share his insights on the strategic implementation of AI in education at Tech & Learning's EdExec Summit in Atlanta. Having recently stepped down as superintendent of Centennial School District in Pennsylvania, Bedden will discuss his experiences leading the district's AI initiative.
By conference week, Bedden will be more than a month into his new role as the leader of Village Charter School in New Jersey. However, his impact on Centennial's AI-driven education revolution will remain significant.
Centennial's AI implementation is not a mere addition of technology; it is a strategic, district-wide plan designed to enhance leadership, teaching, and learning. The district continually assesses AI tools for age-appropriateness, potential bias, privacy protections, accessibility, and data security.
In the classroom, students learn about the proper use of AI and are taught not to rely solely on it. An ethics course is mandatory for students in grades 7 to 12, emphasising transparency, accountability, and safety. The course covers the ethical use of AI and the protection of student data.
Centennial's AI deployment includes the use of an AI chatbot on their website to answer questions and a video featuring students using AI to aid their learning. The aim is to equip educators and staff with the skills to safely and effectively leverage AI for innovative teaching, personalised learning, and efficiency.
The district's AI implementation adheres to regulations such as FERPA, IDEA, ADA, CIPA, COPPA, and district policies to ensure a safe, legally sound environment. Teachers have the final say on whether students use AI, and any cheating is handled like plagiarism.
Bedden's approach to AI in education is comprehensive and prudent. He emphasises the need for a controlled and measured introduction of AI to students, gradually building lifelong AI skills while maintaining ethical standards. He hopes that educators will accept AI as part of the world while maintaining the human element and using it with a code of ethics.
Parents and constituents have had mixed reactions to the AI focus in Centennial schools. However, Bedden's vision is clear: to ensure a thoughtful, purposeful approach to technology use in Centennial School District to build sustainable, future-ready education systems.

At the Village Charter School in New Jersey, where Dana Bedden will be the leader, the focus will shift from AI implementation at Centennial School District to implementing his insights gained from leading Centennial's innovative AI-driven education.
Teachers at both schools play a crucial role in deciding the use of AI, maintaining the ethics of student learning by treating AI cheating similar to plagiarism.
The implementation of technology in Centennial, far from being purely technological, is a strategic, district-wide plan aimed at enhancing leadership, teaching, and personalized learning, ensuring ethical AI use and safeguarding student data.
