Airbus Opens Highly Automated, Eco-Friendly Hangar in Augsburg
Airbus has opened a new, highly automated hangar in Augsburg, Germany. The facility, attended by Bavarian Minister-President Dr Markus Söder and other dignitaries, will manufacture rear centre tanks (RCTs) for the A321XLR aircraft, which has over 500 orders.
The hangar, spanning nearly 12,000 m2, includes office space and a canteen, employing over 250 people. It features advanced graphic design technologies and a high degree of digitalisation and automation, prioritising employee ergonomics and sustainability. The RCT produced here, with a volume of around 13,000 litres, extends the A321XLR's range up to 8,700 kilometres.
The hangar is insulated to reduce energy consumption, with a grass lawn roof for natural insulation and a photovoltaic system producing enough electricity for approximately 140 households annually. This eco-friendly design aligns with Airbus' modernisation and digitalisation efforts, supporting the A320 Family's production ramp-up to 75 per month by 2027.
The inauguration of the new hangar in Augsburg marks a significant step in Airbus' production capacity expansion. The facility's state-of-the-art graphic design technologies and sustainable design will contribute to the manufacture of A321 aircraft fuselages and the A321XLR, meeting the high demand for this aircraft model.
