Yekaterinburg's Koltsovo International Airport has introduced an innovative passport control system, named "Sapsan," that leverages artificial intelligence to enhance efficiency, security, and the overall traveler experience. The cutting-edge technology, which is a part of the major infrastructure upgrade at the airport, operates without disrupting ongoing operations.

## How the Sapsan System Works

The Sapsan system, which employs contactless technology, quickly and accurately scans and verifies traveler documents without the need for manual intervention. It instantly recognizes passport data while identifying any attempts to present fake or invalid documents, ensuring a secure and reliable process.

## Benefits of the Sapsan System

The Sapsan system offers numerous advantages. It significantly reduces wait times to under a minute and can handle up to 2,000 travelers per hour, making it much faster than traditional methods. By integrating AI, it provides robust security features that help prevent fraudulent activities by detecting invalid documents. Furthermore, it improves the overall traveler experience by offering a seamless and efficient passage through border control, enhancing the airport's operational efficiency and passenger satisfaction.

## Modernizing Koltsovo Airport

The modernized border crossing point at Koltsovo Airport, now named "Sapsan," boasts 110 passport control booths and has been equipped with additional modern technologies. Total investments in modernization amounted to approximately 2.7 billion rubles, with the airport contributing around 1.2 billion rubles and state funding totaling 1.5 billion rubles.

As a result of these upgrades, the capacity of the modernized border crossing point has increased from 1.3 to 2.2 thousand passengers per hour. The airport's international flight destinations cover 28 routes, with more than 10 foreign airlines operating international passenger flights at Koltsovo.

## Passenger Growth and Expansion

In 2024, Koltsovo International Airport served over 8 million passengers, marking a 9% increase from the previous year. International passenger numbers at the airport grew by a third, reaching 2.2 million. In the first half of 2025, international passenger numbers increased by 11.7%.

The "Sapsan" system allows the airport to handle up to one and a half times more international passengers. To use the "Sapsan" service, passengers need to have a foreign passport of the 75th series or later. There are four "Sapsan" booths for departures and arrivals at the modernized border crossing point. Preliminary estimates suggest that up to half of international passengers can now use the "Sapsan" system.

The opening of the modernized border crossing point was attended by Denis Pasler, Governor of Sverdlovsk Oblast, and Andrei Nikitin, Russian Minister of Transport. The event marked a significant milestone in the development of Koltsovo Airport and the travel industry in Yekaterinburg.

To further enhance the travel experience, a new premium comfort lounge called "Agat" has been opened for passengers traveling to Customs Union countries. With these advancements, Koltsovo International Airport continues to provide a modern, efficient, and comfortable travel experience for its passengers.

The Sapsan system, a technological innovation deployed at Koltsovo International Airport, also optimizes other sectors by potentially integrating with finance, transportation, and the industry, streamlining various document verification processes and reducing the time for transactions.

The successful implementation of the Sapsan system at Koltsovo Airport mirrors the growing trend of employing AI solutions in finance, transportation, and industry, further highlighting the potential for this technology to revolutionize these sectors.
