Albany Graphite secures a $500,000 grant for a purification and anode enhancement initiative

Albany Graphite, a subsidiary of Zentek, has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the Ontario Government's Critical Minerals Innovation Fund (CMIF). The funding will support Albany Graphite's graphite purification and project management project.

The project aims to produce approximately 5-6 tonnes of 85% purity flotation concentrate from a 110-tonne bulk sample collected in 2019. Albany Graphite will contribute $314,500 to the project, while NRCan CanmetENERGY will provide $200,000 of in-kind support.

The collaboration includes purification testing of Albany Graphite in NRCan CanmetENERGY's custom-built electrothermal FBR. The manufacturing company has already demonstrated its ability to purify the material to an ultra-high purity level without using chlorine gas or any other halogen gases.

The high-purity graphite produced from this project will be supplied to OEMs and end users for assessment and qualification. Marketing samples of ultra-high purity graphite will also be created for third-party evaluation in advanced material applications.

The testwork will involve suitability testing of ultra-high purity Albany graphite samples for lithium-ion battery anode and cathode additive and nuclear applications. Greg Fenton, CEO of Zentek and Albany Graphite, stated that the project will help to further de-risk the Albany project and enhance its investment potential.

According to the management of Albany Graphite, led by CEO Neil McVicar, the project will lead to the production of larger volumes of high purity graphite. AGC anticipates that the project will help enhance the value-add processing component of the anode supply chain.

In January 2025, Zentek announced that AGC had achieved a preliminary, proof-of-concept purity of 99.9991% directly from a larger sample. The successful outcome of this project is expected to further boost Albany Graphite's capabilities in the graphite purification and anode material development sector.
