Alexander Skarsgård Discusses How Working on True Blood Helped Shape His Approach to Playing Murderbot
In the realm of sci-fi comedy, Chris and Paul Weitz, the geniuses behind movies like About A Boy and American Pie, deliver their latest mind-bending creation - Murderbot. This intriguing series, now streaming on Apple TV+, provides a fresh take on androids and the future, starring Alexander Skarsgård in a uniquely uninterested, cold-blooded killer role. But this Murderbot isn't interested in killing; instead, it spends most of its time ditching work to watch television shows. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Skarsgård mentioned that his Murderbot character finds humans thoroughly baffling and just wants to escape their puzzling antics.
"This Murderbot just can't seem to fathom humans," Skarsgård stated. "It's not about hate, it's simply a lack of curiosity. It's perplexed by our existence."
Much like Skarsgård's previous role as the eternally questioning Eric Northman in True Blood, Murderbot observes human nature from a distance. "Eric and Murderbot share the common ground of observing humanity, but from a distinct perspective," Skarsgård explained. "Eric, being a vampire, has witnessed humanity for centuries, even though he's detached. Murderbot, on the other hand, possesses organic components, which allow it to discern human emotions but find them foolish and absurd."
Although the roles may appear dissimilar, Skarsgård's Murderbot shares a resemblance to his vampire counterpart in one key area: its reluctance to take center stage. "Murderbot undeniably favors a quiet, unassuming role, whereas Eric thrives on causing chaos and stirring the pot," he said.
