Alexandria Council to Review Human Services Grants, Approve Defense Contractor Expansion

The Alexandria City Council is set to hold a meeting where they will tackle several key issues. Top on the agenda is the review of a new framework for the fiscal 2027-2029 Alexandria Fund for Human Services grant cycle. The full docket and supporting materials are available online for public perusal. Additionally, the Council will finalize agreements linked to a major defense contractor's expansion, and consider an application for a fiscal 2026 Virginia Emergency Shelter Upgrade Assistance Grant.

The Council will also consider a new framework for distributing human services grants. This comes as Systems Planning & Analysis Inc., a major defense contractor, commits to a $46.9 million expansion in the city. The company's CEO, Rich Sawchak, is expected to be involved in discussions regarding a building use agreement with the city. This expansion is projected to create 1,200 new jobs over the next five years.

In addition to these business matters, Council members will provide oral reports on their service on regional boards and committees. The city's achievements will also be recognized, with the AlexWest Plan earning the Virginia Plan of the Year Award. The meeting will commence with proclamations recognizing September as National Preparedness Month and Hispanic Heritage Month.

Public participation is encouraged. Written comments can be submitted to [email protected], and members of the public can register to speak during the meeting. The Council's review of the human services grant framework and the defense contractor's expansion plans are expected to significantly impact the city's fiscal future and job market.
