AMD Nears Intel in CPU Market Share; Ryzen 7 9800X3D Leads Gaming Performance
AMD has made significant strides in the CPU market, increasing its share on Steam by two percentage points since June 2025. This trend continues a year-long growth, as reported by the reliable Steam Hardware Survey conducted by Valve. Meanwhile, Intel's CPU market share has hit a historic low, with AMD closing in on the lead in the stock market today.
The Steam Hardware Survey, running since 2004, provides detailed insights into the gaming market. It shows Nvidia maintaining its dominant GPU position with around 74% market share, despite no significant gains or losses. The most popular GPU on Steam is currently the RTX 4060 Laptop GPU (Test).
In the CPU market, AMD's progress is notable. It has expanded its share to 41.32%, narrowing the gap with Intel, which stands at 57.68%. AMD's Ryzen 7 9800X3D is tipped to become the market-leading CPU for gamers due to its impressive gaming performance, thanks to AMD's 3D V-Cache technology. While Intel plans new CPUs like Nova Lake and Panther Lake in 2026, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D remains the top choice for elite gaming performance in 2025.
In the VR sphere, Meta Quest 3 (Test) has become the most popular VR headset on Steam, surpassing its predecessor, the Quest 2. Meta leads the market for VR headsets compatible with Steam, with all Meta/Oculus headsets combined showing strong dominance.
AMD's CPU market share growth on Steam continues, with AMD closing in on Intel's lead in the stock market today. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is set to lead the market in gaming performance. Meanwhile, Meta Quest 3 has taken the top spot for VR headsets on Steam, solidifying Meta's market dominance in VR.
