It's happening in Erfurt, Germany! Andritz AG, the Austrian powerhouse, has officially launched its green hydrogen manufacturing facilities. At the grand unveiling of the production site, the company declared its intention to cater to Europe's ever-growing hydrogen market, right from Thuringia. The location, historically known for producing auto industry presses under Andritz Schuler, will now focus on green hydrogen production.

The new plant boasts an initial production capacity of a whopping one gigawatt. This equates to about 160 to 200 electrolyzers yearly, devices that magically transform water into hydrogen and oxygen.

First stop for these state-of-the-art devices? Salzgitter AG.

Components for hydrogen production have been in production in Erfurt since March. Included in this arsenal are electrolyzer cells, better known as stacks. Andritz AG confirmed that around 350 employees currently work at this site, with around 100 of them dedicated to the production of electrolyzers in the future.

Joachim Schönbeck, CEO of Andritz, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Our site in Erfurt benefits from the existing infrastructure and draws on over 125 years of expertise in heavy machinery construction."

Mario Voigt, Thuringia's Minister President (CDU), also extended his praises for the site in Erfurt. He characterized it as a haven for skilled workers and a robust industrial environment. He went on to proclaim that Germany now boasts one of its major production sites for electrolyzers, planted right here.

The electrolyzers produced in Erfurt are based on the technology of partner HydrogenPro. These marvels of modern technology are intended for a 100-megawatt hydrogen plant at Salzgitter AG, aiding in the reduction of CO2 emissions during steel production.

Established in Vienna, Andritz AG employs a whopping 30,000 people across around 80 countries.

Just a few days ago, Thyssenkrupp Nucera and a Fraunhofer Institute opened a pilot plant in Arnstadt, Thuringia, for testing a new method of green hydrogen production. The project explores the large-scale industrial application of high-temperature electrolysis technology (SOEC) for hydrogen production as an energy carrier.

The community policy in Thuringia, Germany, should focus on supporting and encouraging the growth of vocational training programs for the increasing demand of skilled workers in the hydrogen and renewable-energy industry, given the rise of green hydrogen manufacturing facilities, such as the one established by Andritz AG.

In line with Andritz AG's strategic expansion into the European market for green hydrogen, finance institutions and investors should consider allocating resources towards supporting the production and implementation of renewable-energy technology, like hydrogen production and storage, to aid in the transition towards a more sustainable energy industry.
