Applications for Moves 1 and 2 in Asturias have already been settled, while those for Move 3 are nearing completion.
The electric vehicle (EV) charging sector in Asturias, Spain, is gearing up for significant changes, with the unification of payment systems seen as a key strategy to simplify user experience and foster competition. This shift was emphasized by Nieves Roquenní, the Minister of Ecological Transition, Industry, and Economic Development of the Government of Asturias, during the third edition of Moveo, an event organized by the Association of Electric Vehicle Users (AUVE) at the Oviedo Exhibition and Congress Palace.
Held recently, Moveo brought together over 150 professionals, marking a significant gathering to discuss the future of EV charging in the region. The third edition of the program received around eight million euros in its first call, with the Moves III Plan extended until December 2024, receiving an injection of 200 million euros.
The Moves III Plan, managed by Nieves Roquenní, aims to promote sustainable mobility and the deployment of charging infrastructure. So far, approximately seven million euros from Moves III have already been finalized, with subsequent releases of funds increasing the total funds to 28.6 million euros for the promotion of electric mobility.
Portugal's electric vehicle charging market is characterized by its focus on interoperability, allowing drivers to make journeys across the country with a single card. Spain, on the other hand, currently has over 34,000 charging points, each operating with a different payment application, leading to a complex provisioning process for many users. A proposal has been made to unify payment systems for EV charging stations in Spain, following the example of Portugal.
To provide a timely response to citizens, teams are being strengthened to resolve requests due to bureaucracy and the involvement of European funds. Asturias has registered more than 4,400 individual applications that require review. The great challenge facing the administrations is to resolve these requests in the shortest time possible.
Promoting sustainable mobility requires a collective effort involving administrations, manufacturers, vendors, and citizens. Moveo and AUVE aim to raise awareness and make the public aware of the alternatives to traditional combustion cars. They are spearheading the promotion of understanding of sustainable mobility and alternative options beyond traditional combustion cars.
In the previous editions Moves I and II, more than two and a half million euros were managed, and all requests were resolved, although not all payments were made. To ensure a smooth transition, it is crucial to provide incentives to stimulate demand for electric vehicles and to deploy fast and ultra-fast charging point infrastructure.
The challenge of unifying payment systems is seen as a national challenge that will require the creation of regulations and the promotion of standardization with regard to applications and payment platforms. This move is expected to streamline the user experience, encourage competition, and make EV charging more accessible for all.
