Approval Secured for MG's Electrified SUV, the MGS6 EV, to Go on Sale Down Under
The automotive world is abuzz with excitement as MG prepares to launch its new electric SUV, the MGS6 EV. This upcoming model is expected to be bigger than its predecessor, the MGS5 EV SUV, and potentially bring it closer to the size of a 4.7-metre SUV like the Tesla Model Y.
The MGS6 EV will be offered with four variants, each equipped with different battery packs and drivetrain options. The smaller 62 kWh battery pack, featuring Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) chemistry, is available in the entry-level rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variant. On the other hand, the larger 77 kWh battery pack, with Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese (NCM) chemistry, can be found in the more premium trim levels.
The regulatory documentation for the MGS6 EV variants refers to these premium trim levels as "COM", "LUX", and "FLG". While the exact meanings of these acronyms have not been officially confirmed, they likely represent different trim or specification levels, similar to common naming conventions in the automotive industry. "COM" is likely to stand for a "Comfort" or entry-level trim, "LUX" for a "Luxury" trim, and "FLG" for a "Flagship" top-tier version.
The MGS6 EV will also make use of MG's Modular Scalable Platform, first introduced in the MG4 affordable hatchback. This platform is designed to offer flexibility and scalability, allowing MG to cater to various customer segments.
As for the local pricing, MG has yet to reveal the exact figures. However, based on current estimates, the expected starting price of the MGS6 EV is around $50,000 when it is announced closer to its launch.
Riz Akhtar, a specialist in Australian EV data, insight reports, and trends, is eagerly awaiting the unveiling of this new model. As the founder of carloop, a platform focused on reducing transport emissions in Australia, Akhtar drives a red Tesla Model 3. Akhtar's passion for EVs and his goal to promote a greener future in Australia make him an influential figure in the Australian EV scene.
MG's new electric model, the MGS6 EV, has already received approval for sale in Australia. This approval occurred after the MGS5 EV received approval in December 2024, marking another step forward in MG's electric vehicle journey.
The MGS6 EV will also offer the same industry-leading 10-year/250,000km warranty as other new MG models, providing peace of mind to potential buyers.
As we await more details on the MGS6 EV, including key local specifications and pricing, it's clear that this new model is set to shake up the electric SUV market in Australia. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
