Jersey Archives Expands with a £3.5 Million Extension

Archive Expansion in Jersey

The Jersey Archives, a vital repository tasked with preserving and making accessible the Island's unique archival heritage, celebrated its 20th anniversary by doubling its capacity with a £3.5 million extension. The project, carried out by AC Mauger Construction, was completed in 2020.

The architectural firm Ehret+Klein led the extension, which included the construction of a 3-storey strong room building and ancillary areas. The new extension allows the archive to continue collecting the official, community, and personal records of the Island for many years.

The site management team from AC Mauger toured the existing archive repository at the start of the project and took on board the historic importance of the documents and the specialist requirements of Jersey Heritage. BDK Architects were the architects for this project.

The building's purpose required specialized techniques to ensure it was moisture-free and suitable for record storage. Special Forticrete blocks, which needed to be ordered well in advance and stored off site in dry conditions, were used in the construction. The building needed to dry out for six months before it was ready for occupation in 2020.

An external programming consultant was utilized by AC Mauger for regular progress monitoring throughout the project. Advanced M&E services were critical to the operation of the building, and these had to be linked to the original operating systems.

Security for the existing operating Jersey Archives building was critical during the construction process. AC Mauger provided dedicated secure access into the site and escape routes for the existing building. Close proximity of neighbours necessitated the monitoring of noise during the piling operations.

Weekly meetings between AC Mauger and Jersey Archives staff were valuable for managing site operations around the existing building. Jersey Heritage Archives and Collections Director, Linda Romeril, praised AC Mauger for their understanding and handling of the unique nature of the passive archive repository and the challenges it presented.

The new extension provides storage for important paper and digital records for approximately 25 years. The project marks a significant step forward in preserving Jersey's rich history for future generations.
