Artificial Intelligence Summaries Reappear in iPhone News Applications, Caution Included
In a recent update, Apple has released iOS 26, bringing a host of new features to iPhone users. One of the notable additions is the return of AI notification summaries, which had been absent since January.
The return of AI notification summaries comes after a few weeks, following the BBC's December report that highlighted how the feature sometimes twisted media organization's notifications and displayed inaccurate information. With the latest update, users now have more control over these summaries.
Upon updating to iOS 26, users are asked for permissions for AI notification summaries. They can choose to "Choose Notifications to Summarize," allowing them to select specific categories for the summaries, or they can simply select "Not Now" to temporarily disable the feature. If they decide to allow AI notification summaries, the button will read "Summarize Selected Notifications" if categories are chosen, or "Summarize All Notifications" if all categories are selected.
Interestingly, Apple has also included a warning during the setup of AI summary notifications for news and entertainment apps in iOS 26. The alert informs users about the activation and data handling involved in these AI-powered features. It states that "Summarization may change the meaning of the original headline," and advises users to verify information.
Besides the AI notification summaries, iOS 26 also includes call screening and hidden features for the iPhone. Notably, the update features a new Liquid Glass redesign. However, users who find the Liquid Glass effects excessive can refer to a guide provided to reduce these effects in the update.
Another useful addition is a guide on how to enable call screening on the iPhone. This feature allows users to screen calls before answering them, providing an extra layer of protection against unwanted calls.
For those who prefer a quick reference guide, Apple has also included an iOS 26 cheat sheet. This document provides a concise overview of the new features and changes in the update, making it easy for users to understand and navigate the new iOS.
Lastly, if users find they don't like the AI notification summaries, they can easily turn them off by following the same steps and disabling the Summarize Notifications toggle.
The iOS 26 update was announced at the June Worldwide Developers Conference and was released on Monday. With its array of new features and improvements, iPhone users have plenty of reasons to update and explore the latest offerings from Apple.
