This prestigious ceremony is part of the longest-running festival, summit, and showcase for independent games, and this year, it celebrated a diverse array of titles that pushed the boundaries of gaming.
One such game was Consume Me, a darkly humorous personal game developed by Jenny Jiao Hsia, AP Thomson, Jie En Lee, Violet W-P, and Ken "coda" Snyder. This game, which delves into Hsia's past experiences with dieting and disordered eating, won the Seumas McNally Grand Prize, the Nuovo Award, and the Wings Award, bagging a total of $10,000.
The Nuovo Award, which celebrates works that exhibit exceptional artistic achievement and a fresh approach to game design, was a fitting recognition for Consume Me's unique narrative. Meanwhile, the Wings Award, which honours games that explore or express emotion, empathy, and human rights, underscored the game's powerful impact on players.
Other notable winners included Caves of Qud by Freehold Games and Kitfox Games, which took home the Excellence in Narrative Award, and Tactical Breach Wizards by Suspicious Developments, which won the Excellence in Design Award. Hauntii by Moonloop Games was also recognised for its visual prowess, winning the Excellence in Visual Art Award.
The IGF Awards also recognised outstanding student work with Slot Waste claiming the Best Student Game title. ChromaCorp, an innovative game controlled by physical gestures, won the alt.ctrl.gdc Award. The community-driven Audience Award was shared between The WereCleaner and The WereCleaner Team, and The WereCleaner also won the Audience Award.
All the IGF-nominated titles, including both finalists and winners, were playable for GDC pass holders at the IGF Pavilion. This provided an opportunity for attendees to immerse themselves in the groundbreaking games that the IGF Awards aim to celebrate.
