Audemars Piguet's RD#5: A Chronograph Game-Changer

Audemars Piguet's Research & Development (RD) series, launched in 2015, aims to push industry boundaries and tackle longstanding watchmaking challenges. The latest addition, the Royal Oak 'Jumbo' Extra-Thin Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Chronograph RD#5, is no exception.

Led by director of R&D Lucas Raggi, the project aimed to recreate the softer pusher sensation found in vintage watches. The challenge lay in overhauling the chronograph function's operation. Raggi, known for cultivating complex projects involving new complications, dial colors, and designs, took a fresh approach for RD#5.

Previously, RD#3 slimmed down a tourbillon complication, while RD#2 achieved a single-level layout for a perpetual calendar, reducing watch thickness. RD#1 focused on enhancing the minute-repeater complication's sound. The most complex watch produced by AP, RD#4, boasted 23 complications and 17 technical devices.

The Audemars Piguet RD series continues to set new industry standards with its innovative solutions. The Royal Oak 'Jumbo' Extra-Thin Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Chronograph RD#5, with its unique chronograph function and softer pusher sensation, is a testament to the company's commitment to pushing watchmaking boundaries.
