Belarus' Nuclear Plant to Undergo Major Repairs, Sending Spent Fuel to Russia
Belarus is preparing for significant maintenance at its nuclear power plant. The second power unit will undergo a planned preventive repair (PPR), with work commencing in November and potentially extending into January. This will be the second PPR since the plant's operation began.
During the repair, spent nuclear fuel will be sent to Russia for processing. This process takes decades to complete. Once the repairs are finished, the second power unit will return to standard operation mode. Following this, work will commence on the first power unit, marking the fourth repair since its launch.
The repair of the second power unit will involve replacing almost a quarter of its fuel. The unloaded fuel, which has reached the end of its service life, will be stored in a holding pool within the reactor compartment before being transported to Russia for processing. Despite the extensive work, the company conducting the repair work on the first reactor block remains unknown.
The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant's second power unit is set for a significant overhaul, with repairs expected to last until the end of the year, or potentially into January. Following the completion of these repairs, work will begin on the first power unit. The spent nuclear fuel will be sent to Russia for processing, with the entire process taking decades to complete.
