The Future of Berlin's Gaming Scene: House of Games
Berlin acquires a game-centric building
Get ready for the next big thing in the gaming industry! Berlin's latest project, the House of Games, is set to revolutionize the scene by offering a haven for start-ups, developers, tech providers, and more under one roof. Situated in the heart of Friedrichshain, this five-story brick beauty spreads across nearly 15,000 square meters.
Unveiled by Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) and the Senator for Economics Franziska Giffey (SPD), this much-anticipated project is expected to create jobs, nurture ideas, and foster connections within the gaming community.
A Gaming Industry playground
With the support of the Senate to the tune of 4.6 million euros, the House of Games aims to bring together heavy hitters in the gaming industry, forward-thinking start-ups, tech and service providers, and associations, research institutions, and cultural entities under one roof. This diverse mix aims to foster a collaborative environment, where innovation thrives and creative ideas take flight.
Setting Sail in 2026
Construction work is slated to begin "soon," with expectations of an early 2026 opening. The House of Games will serve as a beacon for the gaming industry not only in Berlin but beyond. With Berlin's recent economic growth, propelled by its varied positioning and focus on tech growth industries, the city has established itself as a key player in the gaming landscape[1].
Mayor Wegner envisions Berlin as a global leader in gaming: "We're already the gaming capital," he declared. "We've got the most companies, plenty of developers, but most importantly, an unstoppable growth spurt in this sector."
One-of-a-kind and Unleashing Potential
According to the state-run company Berlin Partner, over 350 companies in Berlin's computer games industry employ more than 4,000 people, generating an annual turnover of over 400 million euros[1]. Yet, despite these impressive numbers, the German developer scene captures only a small piece of the global billion-dollar pie. It's estimated that around five percent of revenues come from games developed within Germany[1].
But with the House of Games, Berlin has the opportunity to reinvent the game and unleash its true potential in the global gaming industry. The House of Games, unlike any other in Germany, Bavaria, or internationally, is poised to provide a significant boost to Germany's gaming Sector, giving it a much-needed kickstart.
So, buckle up and get ready for a wild ride because the House of Games is about to make Berlin the talk of the gaming town!
