Bike Giant's Latest Acquisition: The Rebirth of Stages Cycling

Stages Cycling is back with a bang, making a comeback in the cycling world following its acquisition by the world's largest bike company, Giant, last year.

Giant sealed the deal for smart tech brand Stages Cycling in a reported $20.1 million purchase, just months after the company found itself in a lawsuit with its former owner. Now, nine months later, Stages Cycling is back in the game, offering its popular power meters and indoor studio bikes under the new ownership of SPIA CYCLING INC, a subsidiary of Giant.

One of the key innovators of the single-sided power meter, Stages now stocks left-sided, right-sided, and dual-sided models. To cater to owners of old Stages gear, the brand has launched the Stages Rider Support Program. This program honors previous warranties and extends product support for a whopping two years, up from the previous one-year period. Contents with proof of purchase will also have access to loyalty discounts for issues outside of the two-year window or when original receipts are unavailable.

"We're stoked to officially welcome Stages Power meters into the Giant Group, and to ignite the brand's deep connection with the global cycling community," said Donald Yu, president of SPIA CYCLING INC, in a press release. "Our commitment to delivering cutting-edge power measurement technology and intelligent training solutions is unwavering. This brand relaunch marks a significant milestone for Stages Cycling and represents a strategic advancement in Giant Group's global smart cycling initiative."

Pat Warner, VP of Product, shared, "This team has got a lot more to deliver. We've carried the original Stages ethos with us, and our engineering team - comprised of cyclists - is still creating the products we crave as cyclists."

Stages was known for its smart stationary bikes and GPS units when it halted operations in April 2024. At that time, another Giant division, AIPS TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD, filed a suit against Stages for $14 million in unpaid bills. In the turmoil, several notable members of the Stages Cycling team joined Giant to help in the launch of Spia, Inc.

Spia made a play to acquire Stages Cycling LLC and its affiliated companies that filed for bankruptcy in June. The 'stalking horse bid', an initial bid made by the bankrupt company in collaboration with creditors, was accepted.

Originally founded in 2009 by Jim and Scott Liggett and owned by parent company Foundation Fitness LLC, Stages gained traction in the 2010s due to its crank-based power meters that allowed strain gauges to be retrofitted to OEM crank arms at a lower cost compared to other power meters on the market. Stages expanded its product line with dual-sided power meter technology and indoor smart bikes such as the Stages SB20.

In the competitive power meter market, Stages was a pioneer before the rise of other brands like Garmin, Wahoo, and 4iiii. Now, under Giant's leadership, Stages Cycling is aiming to continue its legacy in the market.
