Bitcoin payments will become accepted at all Spar supermarkets across Switzerland in the near future.
The Swiss Bitcoin Conference, held recently in Kreuzlingen on Lake Constance, was not just an event filled with numerous speakers and presentations, but it also marked a significant milestone for the cryptocurrency world. The Spar store in Kreuzlingen is now accepting Bitcoin for payments, making it the first supermarket chain to do so across their stores.
The implementation of Bitcoin payments in Spar stores is reported to work smoothly via scanning a QR code at the checkout. This was demonstrated in a video by Jens Leinert, which showcases the functionality of Bitcoin payments at Spar stores using the Lightning Network and LNURL.
The payment processor handling these transactions is Open Crypto Pay, an open, license-free standard for P2P (peer-to-peer) crypto payments on all blockchains and with all crypto assets. The company offering this platform is SCRYPT.
Open Crypto Pay provides merchants with an API interface to DFX, allowing them to integrate crypto payments into their point-of-sale systems. This means that payments with Monero, Ethereum, USDC, USDT, and other coins are also accepted at the Spar store in Kreuzlingen.
Cake Wallet, which supports Bitcoin, Monero, and a wide range of other cryptocurrencies, is compatible with Open Crypto Pay. Metamask, which supports any Ethereum token, is listed as "Coming Soon" on Open Crypto Pay's website.
While the implementation of Bitcoin payments at Spar stores is a significant step towards the long-awaited mass adoption of Bitcoin in retail, it is still in need of some improvement. Currently, the process might require the use of two phones to scan the payment code from one to the other.
Despite this, the smooth functioning of Bitcoin payments at Spar stores, as demonstrated in Jens Leinert's video, could pave the way for the mass adoption of Bitcoin in retail. Germans living near the Swiss border can now pay with Bitcoin, Monero, and other cryptocurrencies at the first Spar supermarkets.
Reports indicate that Bitcoin payments will soon be enabled in all Spar stores across Switzerland following pilot programs in Zug and Kreuzlingen. The wide-scale adoption of Bitcoin in retail could be marked by Spar's acceptance of Bitcoin across their stores, potentially initiating the long-awaited mass adoption of Bitcoin in retail.
