BMW has officially revealed the name of its upcoming i3 sedan model during the unveiling of the iX3.
BMW is gearing up for an electrifying future, with plans to release more than 40 new or updated models by the end of 2027. This ambitious move is part of the German automaker's transition to electric vehicles, as outlined in the Neue Klasse project.
At the heart of this transformation is the i3 sedan, internally known as "NA0." BMW CEO Oliver Zipse confirmed the name during the iX3's world premiere, and it seems the electric car will arrive before the next-generation 3 Series. The Chinese market will be the first to welcome the i3 sedan, which rides on the same CLAR platform as the regular "G20."
The i3 sedan will also have a Touring version, internally known as "NA1." Spy shots suggest that the i3 sedan and its combustion-engine sibling will look nearly identical. Both models belong to the reborn Neue Klasse lineup, which also includes the iX3 and its electric sibling, showcased recently with the latter still camouflaged and set to debut in 2026.
In addition to the i3 sedan, the next-generation X5 and X7 will gain electric versions for the first time. The outgoing i3 model is likely to be replaced by a longer i3 built on the Neue Klasse platform.
Spy photos also suggest facelifts for the 7 Series and 5 Series are in development. However, there might not be another gas-powered 3 Series wagon ("G51"). BMW still sells an i3 sedan in China, based on the long-wheelbase 3 Series ("G28").
Oliver Zipse, CEO of BMW, has confirmed the name of the i3 during the iX3's world premiere. However, there is no public statement from Zipse directly confirming the release of an i3 sedan. BMW management currently only confirms a broader transition to electric vehicles with the Neue Klasse project.
The next few years will be packed with BMW debuts, as the company moves towards its electrified future. Stay tuned for more updates on BMW's exciting lineup.
