Building a Personal Computer Equipped with a Mechanical Keyboard
A modder known as Flurples, also known as the Campus Laptop Project, has created a unique custom-built version of the Framework Laptop 13, featuring a mechanical keyboard and additional features.
The project began with a Framework Laptop 13, and the open source documentation provided by Framework proved beneficial for this endeavour. However, the lack of documentation for the audio board and fingerprint sensor made the project more challenging.
To accommodate the mechanical keyboard, the laptop's design required a custom machined case due to its size. The keyboard features a trio of rotary encoders, and the placement of these encoders forced a redesign of the speaker arrangement. As a result, the speakers are now attached to the top cover above the battery. The speaker connector cables were lengthened to accommodate the speaker redesign.
The rotary encoders are low profile, blending neatly into the overall laptop design. The keyboard uses Kailh Choc Sunset switches, and the key caps come from two sets, with the shift and escape keys dyed an excellent shade of orange.
One modular input port was sacrificed for a USB-A hub and HDMI port exposed by a custom carrier. Only one of the USB-As is externally accessible, with one used as a mouse dongle hider, and the other for keyboard connectivity.
The machined aluminum case of the custom-built laptop looks at least as good as a stock Framework chassis, but is thicker. The PCB of the keyboard rests on o rings for a more consistent typing experience.
Despite the necessary changes, the speaker redesign worked extremely well. The laptop retains three of the four modular input ports that the Framework is known for. The keyboard, speakers, and additional features make this custom-built laptop a standout among the standard Framework Laptop 13 models.
