Carl Zeiss Acquires Pi Imaging for Enhanced Microscopy

Carl Zeiss Microscopy GmbH has bolstered its imaging capabilities with the acquisition of Pi Imaging Technology SA, a company specializing in single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) arrays and image sensors, technologies that promise enhanced sensitivity in low-light conditions. Dr. Michael Albiez, Head of ZEISS Research Microscopy Solutions, sees this move as securing the future of their core business and driving growth.

Pi Imaging Technology, founded by Michel Antolovic and others, has been working with ZEISS since 2021 on sensor technology in microscopy. This collaboration led to the launch of a SPAD camera, marking a significant advancement in microscopy and technology. Following the acquisition, all equity shares of Pi Imaging Technology SA have been taken over by Carl Zeiss Microscopy GmbH. The integration of Pi Imaging Technology's SPAD detectors into ZEISS' high-end microscopes is expected to enhance both the quality and throughput of microscopic imaging in life sciences.

The acquisition also ensures that all employees of Pi Imaging Technology SA will continue their work under the new banner of 'Pi Imaging Technology SA - a ZEISS company'. This move aligns with ZEISS' strategy to combine Pi Imaging Technology's expertise in SPAD technology with their own microscopy solutions for further development and innovation.

The acquisition of Pi Imaging Technology SA by Carl Zeiss Microscopy GmbH signals a significant step forward in microscopy technology. With the integration of SPAD detectors, ZEISS customers can look forward to advanced imaging applications and improved performance in their microscopy work. The retention of Pi Imaging Technology's employees ensures the continuation of their innovative spirit within the ZEISS Group.
