Cashless parking options with discounts starting from July 1st are being introduced by OPG, allowing users to pay for parking via card or smartphone.
OPG Introduces Cashless and Ticketless Parking in Osnabrück
In a move to modernise parking in Osnabrück, OPG has brought forward the introduction of cashless parking tariffs in its garages from 2025 to this year. This change, effective from 1st July, comes with several advantages for users.
The new cashless system offers potential savings, as cashless payment methods often reduce processing costs and may come with digital discounts or streamlined tariffs. Additionally, it eliminates the need to handle cash or wait for change, leading to quicker entry and exit, and shorter waiting times.
With the new system, users can enjoy ticketless parking, reducing paper waste and simplifying parking management. OPG has installed 20 new self-service machines in its parking garages for cashless payment. These machines allow payment without a parking ticket, by entering the license plate number instead.
The new cashless tariff will be linked to the current tariff adjustment. However, it will result in a maximum of 30 cents more per hour compared to the basic tariff. Interestingly, customers using the cashless machines will benefit from a discount of up to 11% for a two-hour parking period.
The basic tariff in OPG's parking garages will increase by 50 cents per hour from 1st July. However, parking outside the 1A zone in OPG's garages is cheaper than in inner-city garages, which in turn are cheaper than on-street parking.
OPG's Managing Director, Wigand Maethner, explains that the changes in the tariff structure are intended to encourage certain parking choices. He states that the new machines offer several advantages to customers, including faster payment and shorter waiting times.
Separate cash machines in the parking garages will still apply the basic tariff from 1st July. Parking tariffs in OPG's garages will continue to be differentiated based on their location.

The new machines are part of a trend towards cashless and ticketless parking in OPG's garages, marking a significant step towards a more efficient and sustainable parking experience in Osnabrück.
- In line with the technology-driven revolution in parking, OPG's Managing Director, Wigand Maethner, is exploring possibilities to introduce personal-finance benefits in the future, such as integrating financial management apps or rewards programs with the smartphones for cashless parking payments.
- Besides the advantages of cashless and ticketless parking in terms of convenience and efficiency, OPG is considering partnerships with local businesses and financial institutions to offer exclusive discounts on gadgets, especially smartphones, to customers who park cashlessly regularly.
- To enhance the business and personal-finance aspects of the cashless parking system, OPG is also planning to implement a feature that enables users to save their parking records for tax-related purposes and for streamlining their personal-finance management.
