Cathay Pacific increases its order for GE9X engines intended for Boeing 777-9 aircraft.
In a significant move for the aviation industry, Cathay Pacific has partnered with SITA to enhance network connectivity at 51 airports globally. This collaboration aims to boost network bandwidth by up to five times while ensuring cost efficiency at Cathay Pacific's operating airports.
The catalyst for this enhancement is the GE9X engine, exclusively available for the Boeing 777X family, which includes the 777-9 and 777-8F models. Cathay Pacific was the first customer in the Asia-Pacific region to select this engine, noted for its fuel efficiency within its category and compatibility with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blends.
The GE9X engine is claimed to be the most powerful commercial aircraft engine globally, offering a 10% improvement in specific fuel consumption compared to its predecessor, the GE90-115B. This improvement translates to significant fuel savings and reduced carbon emissions.
Alex McGowan, Cathay's chief operations and service delivery officer, stated that the GE9X engine offers market-leading technologies and ensures reliable travel. GE Aerospace commercial programmes group vice president Mahendra Nair added that the GE9X engine combined with the Boeing 777-9 will enable Cathay Pacific to reach destinations across the globe.
In addition to the technological advancements, Cathay Pacific has agreed to acquire GE9X engines from GE Aerospace for 14 additional Boeing 777-9 aircraft. This agreement increases Cathay Pacific's total order for GE9X-powered 777-9s to 35. GE Aerospace will also provide maintenance, repair, and overhaul services for the GE9X engines under the service contract.
The GE9X engine features advanced technology that significantly reduces emissions, aligning with Cathay Pacific's commitment to sustainability. The airline has also taken steps to digitally transform its engineering department, with Trax, an aviation maintenance services provider, selected to support this transformation.
The Airport Technology Excellence Awards celebrate innovation, leadership, and impact in the aviation industry. This partnership between Cathay Pacific, SITA, and GE Aerospace undoubtedly showcases achievements, elevates industry profile, and positions these organisations among top leaders driving aviation industry advancements.
