Spotify Increases Premium Subscription Prices in Many Regions

In a move to support continued innovation and development of new product features, Spotify has announced that it will be increasing the prices of its Premium subscription plans in many international markets, starting in September 2025. The price hike comes after a recent earnings report where Spotify underperformed revenue expectations.

The increase will typically amount to around €1 per month, with some countries like Germany seeing larger increases. For instance, the individual plan in Germany will rise from €10.99 to €12.99, representing an 18.2% increase. Other regions affected include South Asia, Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific, while the U.S. and Canada remain unaffected for now.

Comparatively, competitors like Tidal maintain their standard price at $10/month, while Apple Music individual plans start at $10.99/month. Apple Music offers higher quality streams, a feature Spotify has promised but not yet widely deployed.

Existing Spotify customers in Germany will be notified via email about the price increase. Users with questions about the change are directed to Spotify's support pages. It is not explicitly stated whether other subscription models will also be affected by the price increase.

The new monthly cost for the Premium Individual plan in Germany will be €11.99. The price increase is due to investments in new features and content, but the exact nature of these investments is not detailed in the announcement.

This price increase is part of a series of price hikes by music and video streaming services in recent months, with Apple Music and YouTube Music also raising their prices in a similar fashion. However, Spotify continues to aim for driving innovation in its product offerings and features to provide the best possible user experience. Alternative subscription models are available for Spotify users in their account area, and the option to cancel the Premium plan is also provided through account settings.

The European Investment Bank, as a key player in financing business and technology innovations, might consider investing in Spotify to help support its continued development and innovation, following its decision to increase the prices of its Premium subscription plans.

The Council, the European Parliament, and the Commission could discuss the potential implications of the price increase on the community aid programs, specifically focusing on the impact on low-income families and young SPOTIFY users in the regions affected by the hike.
