ChatGPT Challenges Google's Dominance With 14-Minute User Sessions
ChatGPT, the conversational AI developed by OpenAI, has made significant strides in user engagement and market share, challenging the dominance of search engines like Google. With an average session duration nearly three times longer than Google searches, ChatGPT is transforming how users interact with information.
ChatGPT, born from OpenAI's GPT model introduced in 2018, offers users an interactive experience that goes beyond traditional search engines. While Google still commands 81.6% of digital queries, ChatGPT's share has grown to 9%. Notably, in creative and generative queries, ChatGPT leads with 64% compared to Google's 29%.
This shift in user behavior is evident in the conversion rates and referral traffic. ChatGPT edges ahead in the U.S. with a 6.9% conversion rate, outpacing Google's 5.4%. Moreover, ChatGPT's referral traffic grew explosively by 3,496%, far surpassing Google's modest growth. By mid-2025, ChatGPT was processing over 1 billion queries per day and had amassed 180 million users within 18 months.
ChatGPT's success lies in its ability to provide instant, contextual, and conversational answers, marking a paradigm shift in information access and processing. While Google remains the dominant gateway to the web, ChatGPT is increasingly becoming the dominant gateway to ideas, with users spending an average of 14 minutes 9 seconds per session, compared to Google's 5 minutes 12 seconds.
