Solingen Takes a Leap Forward in Electric Mobility

Solingen, a city with a rich history in both public and private electric transport, has taken another significant step towards a greener future. Four new charging stations have been added to the city's electric vehicle charging network, as part of the "Innovation Campus" in Solingen.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Mayor Tim Kurzbach, Leif Reitis, CEO of the city utilities, Frank Balkenhol, CEO of the GuT, and other dignitaries. The collaboration for these charging stations was initiated by Frank Balkenhol, with the city utilities taking responsibility for their operation.

The expansion of charging infrastructure is seen as crucial for Solingen's transition to emission-free mobility. With the switch to emission-free mobility being necessary for Solingen to meet its climate goals, this expansion is a significant stride in the right direction.

Leif Reitis, CEO of the city utilities, views the company as taking responsibility in building charging stations in Solingen. The new charging stations, located on the parking lot of the GuT's technology center, have a total of seven charging points, each with a capacity of 22 kW.

Christian Olbrisch, product expert for electromobility at the city utilities, mentioned that the increasing number of electric car owners in Hohscheid was considered during the planning of the new charging stations. The number of publicly accessible charging points is considered a crucial factor in electric car ownership decisions.

Mayor Tim Kurzbach emphasized Solingen's long-term commitment to electric mobility. With Solingen being a pioneer in electric public transport, with decades of experience in 'tram taxis', and also a pioneer in electric private transport, the city's dedication to this cause is evident.

Frank Balkenhol, the initiator of the collaboration with the city utilities for the charging stations, expressed the intention of the city utilities to continue building charging stations in Solingen. The expansion of charging stations aims to enable as many people as possible to transition to electric mobility.

In the previous year, 524,000 new electric cars were registered in Germany, showing a positive trend in electric vehicle adoption. This trend continued in 2022, with 470,000 new electric cars registered. With the addition of these new charging stations, Solingen is further solidifying its position as a leader in the adoption of electric mobility.
