Collaboration between KT and Viettel in pursuing the artificial intelligence market in Southeast Asia

KT, a leading telecom carrier in South Korea, and Viettel, Vietnam's largest telecom operator, have joined forces to advance artificial intelligence (AI) and drive digital transformation in Southeast Asia. The partnership, which builds on an initial agreement signed in May 2025, focuses on several key areas.

Key Areas of Collaboration

  1. Development of a Vietnamese AI Language Model: The partnership aims to create a national general-purpose AI language model tailored to Vietnam's unique language, culture, and administrative systems. This model is expected to enhance Vietnam's digital sovereignty by being applied to educational, administrative, and public services.
  2. Creation of Industry-Specific AX Platforms: KT and Viettel will develop sector-specific AI transformation (AX) platforms for industries such as defense, media, and healthcare. These platforms are designed to modernize services across multiple sectors.
  3. Expansion of AX Ecosystem in Southeast Asia: The companies will expand the AX business in Southeast Asia through global partnerships. This move is part of their broader strategy to accelerate digital transformation across the region.
  4. Global AX Innovation Center: A Global AX Innovation Center will be established to foster AI talent and lead research and development in AI. The center will also focus on training AI specialists and developing tools to combat AI-driven threats like voice phishing and deepfakes.

Impact and Objectives

The partnership seeks to drive Vietnam's national AI strategy and support comprehensive digital transformation across its industries. The collaboration includes joint research on AI-based cybersecurity solutions, such as combating voice phishing and deepfake crimes. Data and technology sharing between South Korea and Vietnam is also part of the partnership.

Kim, KT's CEO, emphasized that the partnership goes beyond technology to secure Vietnam's future growth engines. Tao, Viettel's Chairman and CEO, stated that combining the technologies will drive Vietnam's digital transformation across industries.

The cooperation between KT and Viettel is seen as a model for joint growth with companies that have AI capabilities. The deal follows a joint project from a May agreement, moving it into the implementation stage. The collaboration was presented at the Korea-Vietnam Business Forum as a model for joint growth with companies with AI capabilities.

The signing ceremony was held at KT's Gwanghwamun building in Seoul, attended by KT CEO Kim Young-shub and Viettel Chairman and CEO Tao Duc Thang. The partnership's goals include driving Vietnam's digital transformation across industries through the combination of the two firms' technologies.
