Groovy Grub on Headphones: AKG K275 Review

Compact Studio Headphones Assessment: Portable, Clear, Budget-Friendly (AKG K275)

Michael Hahn, the music-loving engineer and producer at Autoland, takes us on a sonic journey with the AKG K275 professional studio headphones.

Cost: $169 USD

Sitting pretty in the $150-$200 price range, the AKG K275 goes toe-to-toe with some sexy audio competitors offering similar performance and features. Choosing the right pair among this posse of headphones often comes down to your personal taste. But don't sideline the AKG K275 without a listen – it sports a unique feel and sound signature that's hard to resist.

Style: Hot off the Runway

The matte black AKG K275? A total 10, baby! Its classy design will have you looking fly as hell out of the box. Foldable for compact storage, the headphones have a coiled 5-meter cable that detaches via a sturdy mini-XLR jack, making them all set for party on the go. Plus, the low impedance keeps these cans a breeze to drive. They performed equally well whether pushed by an audio interface or my iPhone.

Comfort: Sit Back, Relax, and Listen

AKG did good when designing the K275s' suspension headband system. It gives a cozy, supportive sensation that's non-squeezing and won't make you feel like a Darwin's finch with your head locked into place. The ear cups are large enough to accommodate the 50mm drivers, offering plenty of room for your ears. Wore these bad boys for extended sessions, and they were like a dream. Both comfy as can be and jammin' the tunes.

Sound: Where the Magic Happens

AKG headphones have a reputation for top-notch highs, but the K275 takes a refreshing route with a low-frequency focus. The lows are extended, powerful, and nary a loose or boomy beat to be found – likely thanks to those oversized 50mm drivers. The integration of transients in the lows and mids is impressive, with snares and toms feeling full and fast, and the attack of bass instruments nicely detailed.

But, be warned – there's a bit of fogginess in the 250-500Hz region that might affect the separation of certain sources. The highs extend pleasantly from there, with a pronounced softness in the upper midrange that's great for combatting ear fatigue from closed-back headphones. The upper highs are airy without being overly hyped, offering nice realism for reverb tails and room mics.

Verdict: Drop Everything and Check It Out

AKG's K275s are a game-changer for the brand. They're excellent new arrivals to the headphone catalog, with an impressive bass response and smooth top-end. If you're in the market for a new pair of cans, be sure to give the K275s a whirl next time you're at the pro audio dealer.
