Crowd-pleasing AI companions are taking over, one search at a time. Enter Claude, the newest addition to the artificial intelligent assitant squad that can scour the web for the hottest headlines, product prices, and everything in-between.
According to Anthropic, the developer, web search empowers Claude to stay updated with the latest events and information, boosting its precision in tasks that benefit from the latest data. The feature is now available for all paid users, with a promise of it coming soon for freebies.
To let Claude access the vast web, click the sliders button in the prompt box, and enable the Web search toggle switch. When required, include "search the web" in your prompt to ensure Claude refers to the web at large. Claude will notify you when it performs a web search and usually takes a few extra seconds to dish out the goods. You'll find small citation buttons at the end of certain sentences, guiding you to the sources of the information.
Claude can handle diverse queries, from weather updates and sports scores to deep dives into music history and computer troubleshooting. The future of web searching could be transformed with AI, offering a more organic, tailored experience rather than the usual list of links on Google. But, there are obstacles to overcome - trustworthiness of these AI helpers and the sustainability of web content when humans have no motivation to publish online.
To test Claude's news-fetching skills, I asked it for the latest tech headlines, and it performed decently, delivering mostly current and relevant stories. However, the citations tended to direct me to news site's main pages, instead of individual articles. Google's Gemini, was much the same in terms of accuracy.
ChatGPT, the OpenAI bot, struggled to deliver results I found intriguing from the most respected tech news sources. Claude and Gemini fared better in this comparison, though the choice of the best depends on your preference and what you're looking for.
Curious about fact-checking? I probed Claude with a question it already knows the answer to - the number of Oscars won by One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. It aced the question, providing the correct answer, year, and even the context of the big five wins (Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Picture, and Best Adapted Screenplay). The sources Claude used were limited to Wikipedia and the official Oscars site.
Gemini shared the correct answer, along with a wider variety of sources, including YouTube. Its response was more terse and didn't include background information about box office earnings. ChatGPT also supplied an accurate response, including context about the big five wins but also threw in a YouTube video of the Best Picture Oscar presentation.
Complex questions may pose more challenges, pushing the AI to make up answers. I tried tricking these chatbots into thinking Daniel Day-Lewis bagged two consecutive Best Actor Oscars, but all three avoided falling for the bait.
As for online shopping, AI stands to revolutionize the experience. A smart assistant can efficiently sift through user reviews and serve up results in a neat, user-friendly package. I asked Claude for quirky sports or movie gift ideas, and it skillfully searched and suggested some options. However, I could've easily found these suggestions using Google without involving AI.
Gemini presented a more personalized and chatty response, but without web links, potentially due to Google's financial interest in directing users to its main search for these queries. ChatGPT outshone both, providing distinct top picks, with pricing and web-buy links, which could prove beneficial for OpenAI's future income stream.
Web search functionality is still very much a work in progress for these AI tools. In some cases, they work better than a traditional Google search, but there's always the question of how much you can trust these polished, confident responses without checking the original sources they refer to.
