Configuring User Access in a LabVantage LIMS System for a Biotechnology Firm

In a collaborative project aimed at improving the security and usability of their LabVantage LIMS system, a leading biotech company has partnered with Clarkston Consulting to implement role-based access controls. This strategic move ensures that user access to menus, tramlines, and tramstops within the system is controlled based on roles and job responsibilities.

Clarkston Consulting began by thoroughly testing the new role configurations in the development (DEV) environment. Once the testing phase was complete, they managed the migration to the quality assurance (QA) environment, making updates to access restrictions as necessary to ensure accuracy in QA.

Following the successful implementation, Clarkston conducted a detailed demonstration for LIMS users, answering any questions that arose. They also enabled the client’s team to test the configurations themselves, using a predefined access matrix to confirm correct functioning.

At project completion, Clarkston delivered a comprehensive reference document to the client, designed to facilitate future access management and enhancements as the user base grows. This document serves as a valuable resource for the biotech company, providing guidance on how to maintain and further refine their LabVantage LIMS security.

The project's outcomes include robust LIMS security through the incorporation of additional job types, refined role definitions, and better access control or restrictions tailored to job functions. Clarkston configured new Job Types and Roles, such as Viewer and Instrument Team, and refined existing roles like Analyst, Lab Manager, and Administrator.

To achieve these goals, Clarkston utilized LabVantage webpages to restrict access to menus, tramlines, and tramstops by the different Job Types. This strategic approach ensures that each user only has access to the areas of the system relevant to their role, enhancing the overall security of the client's LabVantage LIMS.

This project marks a significant step forward in the biotech company's efforts to ensure accurate patient result reporting, as their products are crucial for clinical laboratories. With enhanced security in place, they can continue to provide reliable services, knowing that their LabVantage LIMS is secure and accessible only to those who need it.

In conclusion, this project between the biotech company and Clarkston Consulting has resulted in improved security and usability for the LabVantage LIMS system. By implementing role-based access controls, the biotech company can now effectively manage user access, ensuring that their system remains secure and efficient.
