Darien High School's auditorium gets an upgrade to Professional Audio-Visual standards courtesy of Metinteractive.
The auditorium at Darien High School in Darien, Connecticut, has received a significant makeover, thanks to the expertise of Metinteractive. The comprehensive upgrade, completed in 2023, has transformed the venue into a state-of-the-art performance space.
At the heart of the renovation is a 24-foot-wide motorized projection screen installed downstage of the proscenium. This new addition promises to enhance the visual experience for both performers and audience members.
Colleen Thompson, director of visual art and music at Darien Public Schools, discovered that a lot of the technology in the auditorium was original to the space, built approximately 20 years ago. The upgrade has brought much-needed modernisation to the venue, which boasts about 1,100 seats.
One of the most notable improvements is the sound system, which has been upgraded to an EAW RSX Series self-powered line array speaker system. The original system, with its big box loudspeakers hung directly over center stage, has been replaced with a small line array in the center and sub woofers.
The sound system overhaul also includes a 64-input Allen & Heath Avantis console and an inventory of high-quality microphones. To ensure seamless control, a Q-SYS DSP system with touch-panel control and Cisco audio network were also installed.
Five Marshall Electronics' HD PTZ cameras were wall-mounted with a remote camera system controller, adding a new dimension to live streaming and recording capabilities. The old system was replaced with Blackmagic Design's ATEM Television Studio 4K8 Ultra HD production switcher and a Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio 4K Pro video recorder.
The stage lighting has also received an update, with stage wash lights replaced with new Chroma-Q Color One LEDs. To improve stage masking, masking draperies were hung on tracks on both sides upstage and downstage to hide the backstage when necessary.
In addition, 50 conventional ETC Source Four fixtures were retrofitted to LEDs, and old ellipsoidal fixtures were replaced with new ETC Source Four Series 3 Lustr fixtures. An ElationLogic TL3.9 LED videowall with a hoist system and power distribution system was installed upstage, further enhancing the visual spectacle.
To address the issue of performers getting slapback echo, the back wall of the auditorium was covered with draperies. Two 75-inch confidence monitors were mounted on the balcony rail, providing performers with a clear view of their on-stage performance.
The auditorium is used by the high school and rented out to clients such as dance companies. With its new capabilities, it is set to offer a superior experience for both performers and spectators alike. The upgraded auditorium at Darien High School is poised to become a leading performance venue in the region.
