Decline in Global Downloads of Amazon's Mobile Applications: According to a recent report

In a surprising turn of events, Shopee, the Singaporean e-commerce platform, has taken the top spot as the most downloaded app worldwide in 2021, according to various reports. Shein, another popular shopping app, came in a close second.

Last year's global leader, Amazon, slipped to fourth place in the global rankings, marking a significant shift in the digital retail landscape. This change was not just limited to the global market, as Shopee's popularity also soared in the United States, placing it second behind Amazon in the U.S. app download rankings.

The rise of Shopee and Shein is part of a larger trend of mobile apps becoming an increasingly important channel for retailers, particularly during the coronavirus pandemic. According to a 2021 report from Sensor Tower, consumers spent over $100 billion via mobile apps and games in 2020.

In the U.S., Amazon remained the most downloaded shopping app last year, followed by Shein, Shop, Walmart, and OfferUp, according to an Apptopia report. However, Shein's growing popularity among U.S. shoppers was confirmed by the Apptopia report. The digital retailer even overtook traditional players like H&M, Zara, Forever 21, and Fashion Nova to become America's biggest fast fashion retailer, as reported by Ernest Research in July.

Meanwhile, TikTok, the popular social media platform, generated $4.7 million in international revenue on Christmas in 2020, according to Sensor Tower, but it was not the most downloaded shopping app worldwide in 2021. The most downloaded shopping app globally that year remains unclear, although TikTok was the most downloaded app overall with 656 million downloads.

Interestingly, Klarna, the buy now, pay later app, emerged as a shopping destination in its own right, making it to the top 10 most downloaded apps in the U.S. Wish, AliExpress, and Alibaba also featured in the global top 10, coming in sixth, seventh, and 10th place, respectively.

However, another report from Digital Turbine found that 55% of mobile shoppers downloaded a new mobile shopping app ahead of the 2021 holiday shopping season. This suggests that the digital retail landscape is still dynamic and open to new players.

Despite the shift in the global rankings, traditional retail giants like Amazon, Walmart, and Target remained the most downloaded apps among U.S. consumers, according to the Digital Turbine report. EBay, on the other hand, had a lower install intent despite high consumer awareness, according to the same report.

In conclusion, the global digital retail landscape underwent significant changes in 2021, with Shopee dethroning Amazon as the most downloaded app worldwide. The rise of mobile shopping apps, particularly during the pandemic, has transformed the retail industry, and it will be interesting to see how this trend continues to evolve in the future.
