Dialing Down on Old-School Calls: WhatsApp, Zoom, Teams Take Over

Decline in landline and cellular call usage

Germany's phone conversation habits are evolving, and landline and mobile calls are taking a backseat. In 2023, landline calls slipped by a staggering 11% to 57 billion minutes, as per the Federal Network Agency in Bonn's annual report. Mobile calls also dipped by 4%, totaling 148 billion conversation minutes.

Traditional phone calls have been on a steady decline in Germany, dropping by 14% in 2022 and 20% in 2023. This shift can be largely attributed to the surging popularity of number-independent interpersonal telecommunication services, particularly messenger and video conferencing services like WhatsApp, Zoom, and Teams. Conversation volume via these apps skyrocketed from 175.1 billion minutes in 2023 to a whopping 196.7 billion minutes in the following year. Instant messages sent over these platforms also surged, climbing from 891.4 billion to 901.9 billion.

Data usage followed the same trend, both via landlines and mobile connections. For landlines, data increased by 35 gigabytes per connection and month, averaging 322 gigabytes. Mobile data usage edged up slightly from 7.2 to 7.4 gigabytes per month and SIM profile. Over 88% of data traffic was managed through the LTE network, while 10% was handled via the 5G network, and mere 2% via the GSM network.

Last year, the telecom industry invested a massive 14.9 billion euros in its expansion, primarily focusing on fiber optic and mobile infrastructure. This investment marked a 13% increase over the previous year.

While the 2024 report denotes a rise in total call volumes, it also underscores a significant increase in instant messaging, indicating a persistent preference for digital communication methods over traditional phone calls[1].

Pro Tip: Keep an Eye on Transition Costs and Dodge Fiber Delays:

Be cautious of costly transition contracts while switching to fiber and watch out for potential delays in fiber provision.

[1] While the 2023 annual report of the German Federal Network Agency does not explicitly detail this shift in phone call preferences, the wider global trend shows a significant move away from traditional phone calls towards messaging apps and video conferencing platforms, with Germany aligning with this trend. This transition could be influenced by factors such as cost efficiency, additional features, video conferencing capabilities, and accessibility.

The community is increasingly turning to digital communication methods, with vocational training programs emphasizing the importance of technology in this era. For instance, the rising preference for messenger and video conferencing services like WhatsApp, Zoom, and Teams demonstrates the integration of technology in our daily communication.

Moreover, as the telecom industry continues to invest in fiber optic and mobile infrastructure, it's essential to understand that technology plays a crucial role in the evolution of our communication policies.
