DeepMind and Ross Lovegrove Unveil AI-Generated Chair
Facebook's DeepMind and renowned designer Ross Lovegrove have joined forces to explore generative AI in design. The collaboration resulted in an AI-generated chair, a testament to their successful partnership.
The project began with DeepMind fine-tuning their Imagen model using Lovegrove's sketches. This process captured the designer's unique style, allowing the AI to generate outputs that mirrored his organic, fluid-like structures and biomorphic forms. The goal was to use generative AI to complete a design project, from initial concept to final, physical product.
A chair was chosen as the design project, balancing a fixed function with evolving form. The AI-generated chair design was considered an authentic extension of Lovegrove Studio's work. To achieve this, the studio and DeepMind worked together to refine prompts and steer AI outputs towards Lovegrove's vision. The final design was then brought to life using metal 3D printing, creating a physical prototype.
The collaboration between DeepMind and Ross Lovegrove has successfully demonstrated the potential of generative AI in design. The AI-generated chair is not just a concept but a tangible product that reflects Lovegrove's distinct design language. This project marks a significant step in integrating AI into the creative process, paving the way for future collaborations.
