Defense force TCG Orucreis integrates with 'Blue Homeland,' marking a significant mid-life modernization
Turkish Navy's TCG Oruçreis Frigate Undergoes Comprehensive Modernization
The Turkish Navy's TCG Orucreis (F-245) frigate has completed a significant modernization program, transforming it into the Turkish Navy's most advanced combat vessel. This extensive upgrade, centred around the integration of the indigenous ADVENT Combat Management System (CMS), has been a collaborative effort involving Turkish industrial companies such as Havelsan and Aselsan.
The modernized TCG Oruçreis now boasts enhanced capabilities for defending Turkey's maritime interests. Key upgrades and capabilities include:
- ADVENT CMS: The integration of over 30 subsystems and more than 6 million lines of code, linking over 700 applications. This advanced networked command and control system enables joint engagement and tactical decision-making with national and NATO data links (Link-11, Link-16, Link-22).
- Missile Systems: The frigate is equipped with the indigenous ATMACA anti-ship cruise missile, along with legacy Harpoon missiles for redundancy. It also features a Mk 41 Vertical Launch System (VLS) capable of launching quad-packed Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles (ESSM) for medium-range air defense.
- Guns and Close-In Defense: The vessel is armed with a 127 mm/54-caliber naval gun, two stabilized 25 mm remote-controlled weapon stations, and a Phalanx Mk 15 Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) for defense against aerial threats.
- Sensors and Fire Control: Upgraded sensors include the AKREP multi-mode fire control radar, enhanced search radars, and the national Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) system for improved target acquisition and engagement.
- Electronic Warfare and ASW Enhancements: Modernized electronic warfare capabilities and anti-submarine warfare systems have been integrated, including updated sonars and the HIZIR torpedo countermeasure suite, improving survivability and underwater threat response.
- Platform and Propulsion: The ship retains its original MEKO 200TN Track II-A design with a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion of GE LM2500 turbines and MTU diesels. This supports speeds up to 32 knots and a range over 4,000 nautical miles. Mechanical and electronic systems have been overhauled for extended service life into the 2040s.
- Strategic Role: The upgraded TCG Oruçreis supports Türkiye’s "Blue Homeland" maritime doctrine by enhancing deterrence and power projection in the Eastern Mediterranean, Aegean, and Black Sea regions.
The mid-life upgrade involved modernization and replacement of 21 systems onboard the TCG Orucreis. Notable external changes include the replacement of Sea Zenith turrets with STOP 25mm Remote Weapon Control Systems, installation of Phalanx Mk-15 Block 1B Baseline 2 CIWS, addition of Aselsan Hizir torpedo defense suite, installation of MAR-D search radar with active phase array antenna, relocation of Smart-S Mk-2 radar to the main mast for improved coverage, addition of Piri infrared search and track system, and installation of AREAS-2NC electronic warfare suite.
The modernization program represents a major leap in indigenous naval technology and operational capabilities, setting a benchmark for future Turkish Navy frigate upgrades. Following the mid-life upgrade, the service life of the Barbaros-class frigates will be extended until the 2040s.
TCG Orucreis participated in the Denizkurdu-1 and Denizkurdu-2 exercises in 2025, serving as the Turkish Naval Forces Command's most modern and highest striking power asset in Blue Homeland defense. Sea trials and acceptance tests for TCG Orucreis were conducted in various bays in 2024, resulting in direct hits on land, surface, and air targets.
The Barbaros MLU contract for TCG Orucreis was signed in April 2018 and the ship was handed over for the project in December 2021. The STACOS Mod 3 combat management system was replaced with Havelsan's Genesis Advent software as part of the modernization. TCG Orucreis is one of four Barbaros-class multipurpose frigates operated by the Turkish Naval Forces, with two constructed in Germany and the remaining two built in Turkey.
With these upgrades, TCG Orucreis now has enhanced capabilities for conducting training without disrupting operations, navigation and operational support, and helicopter and aircraft tactical control, among other additional capabilities such as fully integrated tactical data links and a Rule-Based Decision Support System.
- The modernization of TCG Oruçreis involves the integration of the indigenous ADVENT Combat Management System (CMS), a collaborative effort with Turkish industrial companies such as Havelsan and Aselsan, which enables joint engagement and tactical decision-making with NATO data links (Link-11, Link-16, Link-22) in the realm of science and technology.
- TCG Oruçreis, a key asset in Turkey's maritime defense, now equips the ATMACA anti-ship cruise missile, highlighting Turkey's advancement in manufacture and industry.
- The finances invested in the TCG Oruçreis modernization program have led to improvements in underwater threat response, with updated sonars and the HIZIR torpedo countermeasure suite, as part of the space-and-astronomy industry.
- The modernized TCG Oruçreis, a testament to Turkish naval technology, will extend Turkey's reach in the Eastern Mediterranean, Aegean, and Black Sea regions, playing a strategic role in Türkiye’s "Blue Homeland" maritime doctrine.
