Depop Announces Permanent CEO Change
Peter Semple has been officially appointed as the permanent CEO of Depop, effective August 1, 2025. Semple, who joined Depop in 2019 as the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), has been serving as the interim CEO since May.
Semple's vision for Depop's future centers on accelerating the company's mission to make fashion circular. He emphasizes leading the business through its next growth phase by leveraging Depop’s strong cultural relevance and community-driven approach.
Semple's dedication to the Depop mission and community, combined with his demonstrated ability to lead and inspire teams, played a significant role in his appointment as CEO. Before joining Depop, Semple spent seven years at Google, including time at the Google Creative Lab.
Etsy's CEO, Josh Silverman, has expressed confidence in Semple's leadership and commitment to the mission of circular fashion. This sentiment is shared by Semple himself, who believes that Depop, as a leading resale platform in culture and sustainability, has a crucial role to play in the resale market, particularly in promoting sustainability and circular fashion economy.
The change in leadership at Depop took place in May when Kruti Patel Goyal stepped down as CEO. Goyal, who was previously Depop's CEO, became the president and chief growth officer of parent company Etsy Inc. in May. Rafe Colburn, previously the chief technology and product officer at Depop, also left his position to take on a similar role with Etsy.
Depop's recent performance has been impressive. According to Etsy's report, Depop's gross merchandise sales were at their highest since the business was acquired in 2021. The company also showed strong top-line growth, particularly in the U.S., as stated in Etsy's recent report.
However, Etsy reported a net loss of $52 million in Q1, primarily due to the sale of its Reverb Holdings division. Etsy Chief Operating and Marketing Officer Raina Moskowitz has departed from her role, with Brad Minor taking over her duties after serving as chief brand officer of Etsy.
Semple's appointment comes at a time when the fashion industry is increasingly focusing on sustainability and circular fashion. By steering Depop forward, Semple aims to build on its momentum and embed circularity into fashion, continuing to inspire teams and the community committed to sustainable fashion.
