Digital artists from various studios join forces for a collaborative exhibition showcasing their innovative creations in the digital art realm.
Collaborative Cross-Residency Initiative Explores Virtual Reality and Digital Art
For several years, the artistic landscape has witnessed an increasing presence of virtual reality (VR), inviting artists to explore this interactive and immersive medium. Events focusing on digital art are emerging or expanding their offerings, mirroring the development of immersive technologies which in turn spur creative and intellectual discourse centered around virtual spaces, bodily perception, and relationships.
To encourage and amplify the voices of digital artists, Recto VRso, an international art and VR festival, and Stereolux, a cultural hub in Nantes, France, are partnering to offer a cross-residency program. The goal is to provide an artist with a space and time to work on a digital art project, receiving guidance and feedback from industry experts in the realms of VR and art.
The residency is themed around "Virtual Environment," encouraging artists to ponder the construction of virtual worlds and spectator perception. Key considerations include exploring the codes and illusion tactics between real environments and virtual environments, as well as how to build parallel, complementary, and hybrid environments. This cross-residency paves the way for the themes of Recto VRso 2022: Real Environment / Virtual Environment.
Selected artists will have the chance to dwell in a residency at the heart of European capital of virtual and augmented reality. They will spend five days at the Recto VRso Center, gaining access to advanced VR technology and counsel from experts such as Judith Guez, artist and director of Recto VRso, and the researchers of the Arts et Métiers Institute. Additional time is allocated at Stereolux for project inception and prototype development.
This residency is focused on the project's conceptual phase, rather than ensuring its completion. The artist will delve into immersive technologies to fuel their creative vision and prototype development.
Upon completing the call for projects, the chosen artist will be announced during the virtual edition of Recto VRso, taking place on April 14-16. The deadline for applications is March 8, 2021. Following the residency, the selected artist will share insights into their work and present the outcomes during the physical edition of the exhibition at Stereolux, scheduled for July 7-9, 2021.
Artists and researchers interested in this cross-residency opportunity can find details regarding the application process via a call for proposals, with the selection process emphasizing innovative ideas and impactful potential within the realm of digital art and immersive technologies.
This collaborative cross-residency program between Stereolux and Recto VRso represents a unique opportunity for creators to delve into the intersection of technology and art, fostering innovation and pushing the boundaries of digital art.
- In the intersection of technology and art, artists will be provided a chance to delve deeper into the fusion of fashion-and-beauty and artificial-intelligence within the virtual environment during the cross-residency program.
- As the residency culminates, the chosen artist will share how they integrated cutting-edge technology, including fashion-and-beauty and artificial-intelligence, into their digital art project, offering insights into the future of cross-disciplinary creative applications.
