Digital license sharing enabled through e-ID application
In a significant step towards enhancing digital identity services, the Austrian government's digital subsidiary, youniqx Identity, has introduced new features to their eID app. The app now allows for the secure sharing of digital registration certificates, making digital identity transactions more accessible and convenient for citizens.
The eID-Me app, developed by youniqx Identity, meets existing security requirements, including the upcoming EUDI Wallet requirements, and complies with the international ISO standard. To create a digital identity, users must undergo a liveness check and scan government-issued photo IDs such as a driver’s license or passport using their iPhone. Once verified, a unique eID-Me digital identity is issued, which includes a digital certificate with verified identity claims. This digital identity can then be used to access services easily and securely share identity information in various transactions, whether online or in person.
The digital identity is stored only on the user's iPhone, ensuring full ownership and control. A secure certificate is installed on the device, inaccessible to anyone but the user unless they explicitly choose to share it. The identity is also bound to the iPhone’s authentication method, preventing unauthorized use.
The solution emphasizes privacy and security by design, avoiding third-party hosting and cloud storage of sensitive data. The identity is protected with strong encryption using the iPhone’s hardware security features.
With these new features, the eID-Me app simplifies fully digital road checks in Austria, allowing users to present a borrowed digital registration certificate. The digital registration certificate can now be shared via Bluetooth with other users. The owner of the digital registration certificate can customize the sharing duration, ranging from 1 day to 365 days or a custom duration.
