Discussion Ahead: "Mobility's Role Triggers Emotional Responses"

In the sixth Polestar Future Talk, industry experts Frank M. Rinderknecht and Carla Welti delved into the future of mobility, discussing the emotional aspects and the shift towards electrification.

According to Carla Welti, the emotional connection with vehicles is formed by what's on the inside. She emphasised that a certain deceleration is necessary to truly take a step towards the future, focusing on the human aspects of transportation.

Frank M. Rinderknecht, who has traveled over 12,500 kilometers on an electric bus, echoed this sentiment, distinguishing between mobility for pleasure and mobility by necessity. He highlighted the importance of storytelling in vehicles, as a real story can evoke emotions, stir memories, and trigger needs, regardless of the price.

The discussion also touched upon the topic of autonomous driving, with both guests agreeing that while it could be an ideal solution for commuters, it is unlikely to replace the entire automotive mobility sector. Influencer demands, on the other hand, point towards a future with more vehicles that have character and a story.

Tobias Schmidt, another expert in the field, reiterated the importance of electromobility, stating that it is the future topic. He explained that this development is unstoppable but previously overestimated due to initial challenges and market adjustments. Impressive figures demonstrated at the Globalance event in Zurich further solidified this claim, showing why the electric mobility trend cannot be stopped and yet remains underestimated.

The transition to electric mobility has significantly changed the automotive industry, and motorsports continue to pave the way for significant developments. Polestar, for instance, set up its base camp in the Austrian Alps for the FAT International Ice Race, where they unveiled their Arctic Circle collection, a nod to the four-wheel competition DNA unique to the manufacturer.

The automotive industry is currently going through a period of turmoil, influenced by society, technology, and price pressure. Car-sharing models, for example, have not had the expected success on the market. However, sharing personal vehicle experiences on social media can generate interest, indicating a shift in consumer behaviour.

The more vehicles function through software, the faster they will become obsolete. This raises questions about the sustainability of the current model and the need for a more emotional, human-centric approach to mobility. As the future unfolds, it is clear that the emotional connection with vehicles will continue to play a crucial role in shaping the automotive landscape.
