Disrupted Police Emergency Calls in NRW Due to Technical Mishap
In an unexpected turn of events, the emergency number 110 in numerous locations across North Rhine-Westphalia faced a temporary malfunction this morning. The service and technical authority for the police, LZPD, quickly identified and resolved the underlying technical error with the telephone provider, following an intensive analysis.
The disruption, which was likely only noticeable to citizens for a few seconds, caused several police departments to switch internally to maintain contact with the police. Despite the brief interruption, it is assumed that no emergency calls were lost due to the very brief disruption.
This incident comes amidst a history of emergency number disruptions in the region. In November 2021, North Rhine-Westphalia experienced a nationwide outage of the emergency numbers 110 and 112. Temporary disruptions were also reported in several regions in June 2022.
Marc Lürbke, the FDP's internal affairs spokesperson, expressed concerns about the incident, stating that the basic security provision is still vulnerable. He emphasised that people in acute distress should not be left stranded in a digital void. The FDP state parliamentary group has criticised the incident as a "notruf debacle" and called for fail-safe systems.
In response, Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) has been urged to inform the state parliament's interior committee about the incident and present a plan of action to ensure the reliability of the emergency number at all times.
The police departments in Olpe, the Oberbergischer Kreis, and the Kreis Siegen-Wittgenstein also reported problems but were able to give the all-clear shortly afterwards. The police in Düsseldorf reported a malfunction and advised using the fire department's emergency number or the number 8700 instead.
By the afternoon, the State Office for Central Police Services (LZPD) announced that the technical error had been fixed, and the emergency number 110 was once again working reliably across the state. The Märkischer Kreis also reported that the issue there had been resolved.
While the cause of the technical malfunction is now resolved, it serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a robust and reliable emergency response system.
The temporary malfunction of the emergency number 110, though short-lived, highlights the necessity for enhanced technology in the general-news sector to prevent such incidents, especially given the region's history of emergency number disruptions. The FDP's internal affairs spokesperson, Marc Lürbke, reiterates the need for fail-safe systems to ensure that citizens in distress are never left stranded digitally.
