Always Wired, Never Wireless: The Bold Return of the UHPILCL Liquid-Cooled Gaming Laptop

Every so often, a Kickstarter hardware project captures our attention and leaves us scratching our heads, thinking, "Really now, who even asked for this?" Well, just when you thought it was safe to be unimpressed, another one pops up, and it's downright intriguing. Make way for the retro-futuristic UHPILCL - the "world's first built-in split-type water-cooled gaming laptop" that has us doing a double take.

Now, ordinarily, I'm not a fan of over-the-top tech. But give me a laptop that looks like the lovechild of Frankenstein's monster and a Sci-Fi prop from the '90s, and I'm in! I'm the type who appreciates thosequick-open latches on laptops for easy upgrades to the RAM and storage, and I've been known to perform some borderline laptop surgery to keep a device running like new for 10+ years. So, strange, bulky water-cooled gaming laptops? Sign me up!

Desktop Power in a Portable Package

The UHPILCL boasts an 18-watt water pump and up to 720 watts of heat dissipation, enough to support the latest desktop components. With room for an ITX motherboard, this bad boy can house AMD Ryzen 7 9800x3D or Intel CPUs from the 12th to the 14th generation, even the new Core Ultra 200K series.

But wait, there's more! Picture a full-power Nvidia RTX 5090 nestled in this beast, thanks to the standard PCIe connection and a PCB rated to 230MM or less. Just be prepared to remove the air-cooled heat sink.

The UHPILCL doesn't skimp on memory and storage either, with support for dual-channel DDR5 memory and up to 32TB of SSD storage. All this under the hood, and it only weighs a modest 11.5 pounds (5.2kg), making it backpack-friendly, provided your backpack is at least 17.3 inches in size.

But is it Laptop-Friendly?

Gaming laptops are usually a compromise between power and portability. While it's theoretically possible to transport a water-cooled gaming rig, complete with monitor, keyboard, and all, to a friend's house for a LAN party, sometimes it's more convenient to have something portable that still packs a punch.

The UHPILCL is a bold departure from the norm, featuring full ITX desktop components, including water cooling. It's not something you'll be sitting on your lap anytime soon, but it'll find a comfy spot on your desk or table.

A Fringe Contender in a Niche Market

While the UHPILCL Kickstarter project claims it can be mass-produced, the chances of a major laptop manufacturer jumping on this quirky design are slim. It's a bit too niche for the mass market, but that's all part of the charm, right?

Unfortunately, pricing and release information for the UHPILCL are still under wraps. But if you're like me and can't look away from these strange, work-of-art gaming laptops, you'll be keeping an eye out for updates.
