Drone Disruptions at Munich Airport: 6,500 Stranded, 81 Flights Affected
Drone sightings at Munich Airport have caused significant disruptions, with 46 takeoffs canceled and 6,500 passengers stranded overnight. The incident, which began around 9:30 PM, has led to the indefinite suspension of flight operations.
Drones were spotted over critical infrastructure in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, causing ripples in Denmark's air traffic as well. It remains unconfirmed whether these sightings posed a direct threat to air traffic.
The incident at Munich Airport is not an isolated one. The airport has witnessed six drone sightings since August, with a notable increase in such incidents in 2025. This latest event has affected a total of 81 flights, including 12 cancellations and 23 diversions.
Two drone sightings were confirmed near the north and south runways of the airport. The responsibility for drone security measures during this disruption fell to the federal and state police, as drone detection and defense are under their jurisdiction. However, it is unclear whether Munich Airport has systems in place to detect drones.
Operations are expected to resume early Saturday morning, but the incident has raised concerns about airport security and the need for effective drone detection systems. The impact on passengers and air traffic has been substantial, with thousands stranded and numerous flights affected.
