Economic hiccups expected for Tesla following reduction in U.S. subsidies for electric vehicles
Tesla's Robotaxi Service Expands to San Francisco Bay Area
Tesla is set to launch its autonomous ride-hailing service, known as Robotaxi, in the San Francisco Bay Area as early as July 26, 2025 [1][3][4]. This expansion follows the initial rollout of the service in Austin, Texas earlier in June 2025.
At launch, the service will operate in a large geofenced area covering parts of San Francisco, Marin, the East Bay, and south to San Jose [1][3]. Initially, Tesla plans to deploy the Robotaxi service with safety drivers seated in the driver's seat who can take control if necessary, due to regulatory constraints and the lack of current permits for fully driverless deployment in California [1][4].
Tesla is sending out invites to selected Tesla owners in the area who will be able to hail and pay for rides through the Robotaxi app [1][3]. Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, also revealed plans to expand the Robotaxi service area in Austin and to add additional states across the U.S. over the coming weeks [2]. This suggests a gradual nationwide scale-up beyond the initial limited deployments, although precise timelines beyond the Bay Area rollout have not been detailed.
The launch of the Robotaxi service comes amidst a challenging financial period for Tesla. The company is facing a 12% decline in quarterly revenue, marking the second consecutive quarterly revenue drop [5][6]. This decline occurred despite the launch of a refreshed version of its best-selling Model Y SUV [5].
Additionally, Tesla is dealing with a 51% dive in sales of automotive regulatory credits, which has also hurt revenue and profit for the company [7]. The U.S. government is also expected to cut $7,500 tax credits for EV buyers later this year [8], which could further impact Tesla's financials.
Despite these challenges, Tesla continues to push forward with its plans for autonomous driving. Musk is pursuing autonomous driving to power privately owned vehicles and robotaxis planned for production next year [9]. The company also continues to expect volume production of its custom-built robotaxi, called the Cybercab, and Semi-Truck in 2026 [10].
In the meantime, Musk is also dealing with investor concerns about his ability to devote enough time and attention to Tesla due to his formation of a new political party and a series of high-profile executive exits [11]. However, the profit margin on making cars for Tesla was better than many had feared [12].
