Electrification in Commercial Vehicles: ZF Introduces High-Speed Electric Air Compressor for Fuel Cells and Collaboration with Liebherr
In a significant move towards sustainable transportation, German automotive technology company ZF has announced an exclusive development agreement with Liebherr Group's Aerospace & Transportation product segment. The partnership aims to accelerate ZF's 'Next Generation Mobility' strategy by developing advanced fuel cell air compressor systems for commercial vehicles.
Dr. Peter Laier, Member of the Board of Management, highlighted the need for an open technology approach in the decarbonization of the commercial vehicle industry. With this new product, ZF is set to provide a one-stop-shop support for the decarbonization of road transport.
Liebherr-Aerospace & Transportation SAS, with over four decades' experience in high-power density, high-speed turbo machinery, including air bearing technology, will bring valuable expertise to the table. The compressor, a key component in fuel cell operation, will push air into the fuel cell to enable the chemical reaction for generating electricity.
The compressor, based on air bearing technology, offers several advantages, including oil-free, high-speed, efficient operation, and high power density. Durability across the compressor's life cycle, even in the most demanding heavy-duty commercial vehicle applications, is a key focus.
ZF will exclusively equip commercial vehicles with the developed fuel cell air compressor systems, providing a modular and scalable design that supports a wide range of vehicle platforms. This collaboration is expected to significantly shorten the time to market for commercial vehicle fuel cell air compressors, according to Claus Umnus, Senior Vice President of the product line Chassis Technology with ZF's Commercial Vehicle Solutions division.
The development agreement between ZF and Liebherr was announced on April 27, 2023, in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Dr. Klaus Schneider, Chief Technology Officer with Liebherr-Aerospace & Transportation SAS, mentioned that Liebherr has over 40 years' experience in the development and production of air cycle air conditioning systems, including air bearing technology.
This is not the first collaboration between ZF and Liebherr. Both companies have a history of collaborating on advanced vehicle technologies including powertrains and components for commercial vehicles. Their cooperation could involve combining ZF’s drivetrain systems with Liebherr’s compressors to develop fuel cell air compressors optimized for commercial vehicles, which are key components to supply pressurized air in fuel cell operation for better efficiency and durability.
For the most current and detailed information about this partnership, you may want to check direct press releases from ZF and Liebherr or their official websites. ZF's Commercial Vehicle Solutions division has announced the world premiere of an electric high speed air compressor for fuel cells as part of its eMobility strategy. Dr. Laier also mentioned that ZF's future planning envisages a significant number of fuel cell powered commercial vehicles on the roads, particularly for long-haul vehicles.
The collaborative agreement between ZF and Liebherr focuses on the development of advanced fuel cell air compressor systems for commercial vehicles, leveraging the unique expertise of both companies in technology like air bearing technology and powertrains. This partnership is expected to accelerate the decarbonization of the commercial vehicle industry by providing a one-stop-shop support for the decarbonization of road transport through technology like the oil-free, high-speed, efficient compressor.
