Elon Musk's cosmodrome transformation: Urbanization of the launch site
In the heart of Texas, a new city named Starbase is about to take shape, transitioning from SpaceX's existing operational base as per reports from Liter.kz, The Washington Post, and other sources. This upcoming city will sprawl across 3.8 square kilometers, currently housing over 200 residents.
Of the 247 residential plots situated at the southernmost tip of Texas in the Boca Chica Village area, only 10 are not owned by SpaceX or its employees. SpaceX's move to Texas in 2014 led to the construction of a colossal complex, which the company describes as the world's first private spaceport designed for orbital flights, known as Starbase.
Initially, Starbase was met with warm welcomes from local residents and officials, as they hoped the company would revitalize the economy in this impoverished region where roughly a third of the residents live below the poverty line. However, as time passed, concerns about environmental damages began to surface. Christopher Basaldella, co-founder of the network for environmental justice in South Texas, fears that granting Starbase city status could potentially worsen these environmental problems.
