Enhanced Productivity by 43.61% and CO2 Emissions Reduced by 104 Million Tonnes by DEWA

In a commendable move towards a more sustainable future, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has made significant strides in improving its electricity and water production efficiency. Nasser Lootah, Executive Vice President of Generation (Power & Water) at DEWA, has emphasized the organization's commitment to innovation.

A key executive at DEWA, Lootah highlighted the use of co-generation technology and advanced hybrid systems in DEWA's operations as a strategic move. This integration helps in the production of additional electricity and supplies thermal energy for desalination processes.

One of the key technologies employed by DEWA is the advanced hybrid system in its water desalination plants. This system integrates multi-stage flashing and seawater reverse osmosis, enhancing water production with minimal environmental impact.

DEWA's commitment to innovation is further evident in its adoption of smart grid systems, solar energy projects, water desalination and recycling technologies, digital transformation tools, and energy-efficient infrastructure. These initiatives aim to optimize efficiency and reduce costs in DEWA's operations.

The integration of these advanced technologies has led to a remarkable 43.61% increase in efficiency between 2006 and 2024. This increase in efficiency has resulted in a reduction of 104 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions over the 18-year period.

The reduction in emissions is equivalent to planting 527 million trees, a testament to DEWA's commitment to sustainability. These advancements have also led to substantial financial savings for the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority.

Through these advancements, DEWA continues to set benchmarks in sustainable utility management. The adoption of these technologies further supports its goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions and promoting sustainability. This commitment reinforces Dubai's position as a global leader in clean energy and resource efficiency.
